Frequently asked questions
How can I tell if a supplement is of good quality?
You can recognise high-quality dietary supplements by paying attention to two things:
- Check the list of ingredients. Make a conscious choice to opt for organic compounds and active forms of vitamins. These work more efficiently and are better absorbed by the body.
Organically bound minerals can be identified by terms such as -luconate, -bisglycinate, -monomethionine and -citrate. Active vitamins can be utilised by the body straight away. Inactive nutrients must first be converted into their active form before they can perform their function. This conversion does not proceed equally smoothly for everyone. For this reason, vitamins in their active form are more highly recommended; this applies particularly to B vitamins.
In addition, certain plants contain active compounds that can have beneficial effects
on health. We therefore want to include these compounds in the correct quantities in our products. However, in plants, these compounds are always present in varying concentrations depending on various factors such as climate, season, plant part, variety, soil… By stating the standardisation on our packaging, we always guarantee the concentration and thus the efficacy of the active compound.
- Check whether the supplement has a NUT number. This number begins with NUT, PL or AS (or a combination thereof). The notification number proves that this product meets the strictest Belgian quality standards and complies with food legislation. The NUT number for Nutrisan products can be found on the product pages of the website and online shop.
Does Nutrisan conduct quality checks itself?
Nutrisan is ISO 22000:2018-certified. ISO 22000:2018 certification provides assurance that our products are developed and manufactured in accordance with internationally recognised standards for food safety and quality. Every step, from raw material to finished product, is carefully monitored. This begins with the selection of our suppliers and the procurement of raw materials. Before the raw materials are processed into our supplements, they undergo a rigorous incoming inspection, during which various parameters – such as microbiological levels and other potential contaminants – are checked. At the same time, the standardisation of the active ingredients is verified.
Finally, after production, each batch undergoes a further strict quality control process, carried out in collaboration with independent laboratories, before it is released for sale. Every batch complies with Belgian and European legislation regarding the quality and safety of food supplements.
I eat fruit and vegetables every day – do I need to take vitamin supplements?
Fruit and vegetables are an important source of vitamins, minerals and fibre, and form the basis of a healthy diet. However, it is not always easy to ensure you are getting all the nutrients you need in the right amounts every day. Factors such as age, dietary habits, stress, medication or increased nutritional requirements may mean that vitamin supplements are beneficial. Furthermore, fruit and vegetables often contain fewer vitamins and minerals than they used to. A dietary supplement is no substitute for a healthy diet, but it can be a valuable addition.
What are the recommended doses for the supplements?
The recommended daily dose is always stated on the product packaging, as well as on our website and online shop. If you are seeking treatment from a doctor or healthcare professional, it is advisable to take your individual needs into account.
I find it difficult to take capsules or tablets. What is the best thing for me to do?
Generally speaking, most vitamin and mineral capsules can be opened, but there are a number of important exceptions involving hygroscopic ingredients, such as B-vitamin complexes and delayed-release tablets.
Mix the contents of the capsule with something you can swallow easily (such as yoghurt).
If the tablets have a score line, you can break them into pieces to mix with your food. Tablets that cannot be halved (e.g. those with a special coating or delayed-release formula) must not be broken or crushed, as this may affect their efficacy.
Can I combine different supplements?
Most supplements can be taken together. Be careful when combining similar products, such as stress-relief products, as this may result in the maximum daily dose being exceeded. It is best to seek advice from a doctor or healthcare professional who is experienced in supplements.
What does ‘RI’ mean in the list of ingredients on supplements?
On food supplement labels, RI stands for ‘Reference Intake’. This is the recommended daily intake of a nutrient for an average healthy adult.
Are the supplements suitable for vegetarians and vegans?
Yes, the majority of our capsules are vegan or vegetarian. In that case, this is always clearly stated on the product packaging and is also indicated on the product page in the online shop with the vegan or vegetarian logo.
When is the best time to take my vitamin supplement?
In the morning
- Suitable for many general supplements (such as multivitamins and B vitamins).
- Often taken with or after breakfast to improve absorption and avoid stomach upset.
- Can help support your energy levels during the day (e.g. B vitamins).
In the evening
- Suitable for supplements that promote relaxation (e.g. magnesium, certain herbal formulas).
- Some supplements are best taken in the evening as they can have a calming effect.
With a meal
- Fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K) are best taken with a meal containing fats.
- This significantly improves absorption.
Important to remember
- Always follow the specific recommendations on the label or from your healthcare professional.
- Some supplements work better when taken at intervals throughout the day.
Do the supplements contain allergens such as lactose, milk, gluten, soya, sugar or nuts?
All allergens are clearly indicated on the packaging and in the online shop.
Are the supplements suitable for pregnant women or women who are breastfeeding?
Consult your doctor before use.
Can I take supplements alongside traditional medicines?
We recommend seeking advice from a doctor or healthcare professional who is familiar with complementary medicine so that they can assess the options available.
